What a day!
So we went to the Portland Art Museum today. We went to tour 3 different exhibits. Asian Art work, Native American and European. Now the first 2 really held the kids interest. Lots of cool things to look at, figures, statures, painted art, clay art tons of things. Native American the same thing lots of things to look at, from beaded clothing to ceremonial dress and so on. Then we headed over to the European exhibit. BOY what a difference, it was 99.9 % paintings with like 2 little statues. The kids bored very quickly! So We headed to the gift shop for a bit then out side to eat lunch.
Now keep in mind this is Portland, in the Heart of the Pacific Northwest, it is just 2 days in to spring. The weather here is not what you would call dry or warm at the moment. The Museum had NO lunch area for the kids, It use to, but they have used it to expand the gift shop. So we had to stand out side to eat, half the kids didn't bring jackets and the ones that did where like me light ones.
So after 30 minutes of jumping up and down and bouncing around to keep warm and eating at the same time, we head out on a "scavenger hunt" a walking art tour of Portland. I was not aware before this am that we would be doing this. LOL it was not perfect weather for this! LOL we got rained on, and hailed on and frozen.
Our first stop was Portlandia . Portlandia is the second largest hammered copper statue in America (the largest is the Statue of Liberty).
Then we were off to look for the Soaring Rock statue by John T. Young. I got a bit turned around and had to ask for directions to the street this was on. We finally make it, and we can not Find it anywhere! This is not a small statue we are talking like 10 or more feet tall. The instructions say the SW corner 5th and Yamhill. We look on all 4 corners NOTHING! the kids are sure we are in the wrong spot! ( thanks for the faith in me guys! LOL)
So I figure we have waisted enough time and we head to the next spot that holds 7 of the things we need to find, Pioneer Courthouse square this is when it first starting to rain, and it had some covered buss stops near by so we where able to take cover while doing our hunt there.
Now it is getting to be time to head back to the Museum to get picked up by the bus. It starts to rain harder then all of a sudden a passing by woman says Oh dear it is hailing LOL I hadn't even noticed LOL
So I try to pick streets that the buildings have awnings or over hangs for us to walk under to stay relatively dry.
We get back to our meeting point and start talking to the other chaperone's about the Soaring Stone thing. One of them had asked about it, because they could not find it either. It had been taken down because of construction in the area LOL The person that made the hunt didn't know and so left it in. I say yeah sure! LOL
So after a long cold and wet day we returned to the school. Most of the kids really enjoyed their day out and about the big city! It was THE best group of kids I have ever gone on a field trip with! we had 58 kids, and each chaperons only had 5 to 6 kids, so it was a nice ratio of kids to adult. I had all boys, and they were all really polite and well mannered. I would go with them again if asked! I have had kids that boy I want to wring their little necks by the end of a field trip! LOL this was not one of those times!
Ok off to take care of my very soar and tired body!
